Labelled simply as `Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino Riserva` until vintage 2003, Il Poggione Riserva Vigna Paganelli Brunello di Montalcino is a single-vineyard Sangiovese from one of the most revered estates in Tuscany. It is only produced in exceptional years from fruit sourced exclusively from the `I Paganelli` vineyard, planted in 1964. Founded in the 1800s, Il Poggione has been owned in the Franceschi family for five generations. The estate`s reputation for producing some of the best wines in the region was cemented by former winemaker Pierluigi Talenti (1958-1999). Talenti was succeeded by Fabrizio Bindocci, who was in turn succeeded by his own son, Alessandro. The new winery was built in 2004. "It was a long season in Tuscany, and one of the best of the decade. This Brunello is darker in colour with a darker fruit profile too, with a savoury character of prunes, leather and cigar leaf supported by red cherry notes on the finish. It has a full body and profound extract, with firm and powerful tannins becoming slightly chalky on the finish." Decanter, 2019
