Chile, this long country located on the east coast of South America, has original geological and climatic conditions that have allowed the development of a rich and varied viticulture.
It was the Spanish colonists who brought viticulture to this region of the world, the most widespread red grape varieties therefore come from Europe: Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the grape varieties, followed by Merlot, Carménère and Syrah. The informed amateur will be surprised to also find beautiful quality Pinot Noirs there, this grape variety that appreciates the cool, given the general heat that reigns over the country.
Chilean vineyards are located around the 35th parallel south - the equivalent in the southern hemisphere of Morocco. However, the climate is cooled by several factors. The Humboldt ocean current, very cold because it comes directly from Antarctica, cools the coastal regions. The vineyards are sometimes located in valleys oriented east-west, benefiting from the coolness of the rivers and depressions coming from the sea. We must also not forget the presence of the Andes, these very high peaks which diffuse their coolness towards the valleys.
